What is nearshoring?
Nearshoring refers to the outsourcing of business processes, mainly related to information technology, in a nearby country, often sharing a border with the concerned country. The rationale behind the process is to attain benefits triggered by lowering costs, increasing efficiency, accessing a larger talent pool, while also having the proximity advantage such as similar time zone, culture, language capabilities.
What is outsourcing?
Outsourcing or “contracting out” is a practice used by companies in order to reduce costs as well as improve efficiency by transferring tasks, operations, processes or jobs to an external contractor for an extended period of time. The transferred processes may be performed by the external contractor either onsite or offsite.
What is offshoring?
Offshoring implies relocating one or more business processes from a country to another one. Commonly these may be operational processes, such as for instance manufacturing as well as supporting processes such as accounting, controlling, call centers etc.
Should I go for offshoring or nearshoring?
It really depends on your business specific, goals, processes as well as risk management strategy.
Offshoring involves relocating your company’s processes to a significantly distant location. The undeniable advantage of this is reducing costs as overall salaries in such locations are lower. The downsides reside in time zone gap, long travelling distance, cultural difference and language barrier that according to the process’ specificity may have a high impact on the effectiveness thus obliviating the initial advantage.
Nearshoring involves transferring processes within nearby countries that are more cost effective, as well as offer the advantage of similar time zone, comparable culture, shorter and less expensive travelling. Moreover, such a strategy allows a higher degree of control and timely decision-making in critical situations.
